The quiet part of winter
Everyone talks about the climb. Nobody talks about the quiet — the hour before dawn at the base, the way sound dies in the cold, the absolute stillness of a valley that's been frozen since December.
Sound dies in the cold
Cold air is dense, and dense air carries less noise. A belay at minus twenty is a library. You can hear your partner breathing from thirty meters, and every swing echoes like a bell. It's the only sport where silence is a feature.
The ritual
We brew coffee in the dark, rack up by headlamp, and walk in while the stars are still out. The climb is the loud part. The quiet before it — that's the part I'd never trade.
Why we go
Not for the send, not for the grade. For the quiet, and for the people who sit in it with you. That's frost. That's the whole thing.
